La Higuera is a small community in the eastern part of the La Campiña region which preserves a distinctive Holy Week tradition known as the race of the saints which occurs on Good Friday at a spot known as El Cerrillo.
The Virgen de los Dolores and St. Juan Bautista meet Jesus de Nazaret. The supporting beams are carried by young people on the run for the images to meet more quickly.
During Resurrection Sunday, the bearers repeat the race, this time with the image of the Resurrected Christ holding the beams in their hands and not over their shoulders. Along with this peculiar manner of parading the images the proclamations of the Good Friday vigil: the Confrontation with the angel, the sentence of Lashes and the Sentence of Death make this a quite different Holy Week.
