In Cumbres Mayores the streets spread out like a fan over the slopes of the hill upon which stands the locality’s castle-fortress which was designated a monument of Historical and Cultural value in 1985.
The next stop after seeing it should be San Miguel Arcangel Church, the entrance to the Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Church and the hermitages of el Ampara, la esperanza and Santa María Magdalena.
After so much walking it would be a terrible mistake not to try the delicious ham, paletas and lomos de caña-cuisine of the true mountain town that it is. Other opportunities offered by Cumbres mayors are exploring the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Nature Park or attending its traditional fiestas.
During Corpus the Virgen de la Esperanza y del Santísimo Sacramento dance groups take to the streets. These are groups of ten children that dance to instruments played by themselves, such as the bagpipe, tambourine and castanets. If you attend the Corpus day you can also see yearling calves released in La Portá and Corredera Streets to be driven to the improvised bullring plaza located next to the Sancho IV Castle.
